Residencies

Throughout its 30 year history, Zygote Press has offered local, national, and international residencies to both printmaking and non-printmaking artists. Our residency programs provide an opportunity for artists to work in a well equipped studio and artistic community.

 

PROOF Fellowship (Ongoing)

  • The PROOF Fellowship offers non-printmaking artists from BIPOC communities an opportunity to learn a variety of printmaking techniques including silkscreen, monoprint, relief, intaglio, lithography and RISO.

    PROOF Fellows are introduced to both contemporary and traditional printmaking techniques through a series of workshops led by Zygote Press teaching artists and former fellowship recipients. For the duration of the Fellowship program, selected artists have 24/7 access to Zygote’s Printmaking Studio. Zygote also offers mentoring sessions and peer critiques for Fellows to hone their craft, discuss their work and focus their artistic research toward their individual goals.

Anthony Bartholomew Residency (Ongoing)

  • Zygote Press awards this residency in memory of Anthony Bartholomew to a Kent State University Graduate. Tony was Zygote’s Shop Manager and Artist in Residence Coordinator from 2007 to 2011. Tony received his MFA from Kent State University in Printmaking and continued to teach in the print program as an adjunct faculty member. Applicants to this residency must be enrolled and graduating from a KSU Printmaking Program. The selection process is handled by KSU.

  • A Northeast Ohio fellowship available to regional emerging print artists. This fellowship provides awarded artists with unlimited access to Zygote’s facilities for three consecutive months and inclusion in the Zygote archives. This residency requires an application process and helps emerging artists complete projects or bodies of work that would benefit from Zygote’s specialized equipment and supportive community.

BIPOC Fellowship (2021 – 2023)

  • Annually, Zygote Press offered six paid residency seats to local Black, Indigenous, and People of Color art educators, artists, or creatives for our BIPOC Fellowship. The objective of the BIPOC Fellowship program was to provide artists from BIPOC communities with an opportunity to learn a variety of print techniques, including silkscreen, monoprint, relief, and RISO. This program was for BIPOC artists or creatives in Northeast Ohio, who have little or no experience in printmaking and preferably some experience working in the education sector, as well as established educators and artists serving or have interest in serving the BIPOC community.

OAC Dresden Exchange (1998 – 2019)

  • The longest-running artist exchange program for Zygote (and in Ohio) is the Dresden Exchange. Supported by the Ohio Arts Council (OAC), this exchange brings two accomplished artists from Germany to Zygote’s workshop and sends two Ohio artists to work at the Grafikwerkstatt in Dresden every fall.

    The Ohio Arts Council and the City of Dresden fund the Dresden Residency Exchange as part of an ongoing cultural-artistic link between the State of Ohio and the City of Dresden. This program allows participants to become acquainted with the art and artists of another community, provides dedicated time to explore the printmaking resources of each location, and establishes lasting artistic relations between the two regions. During the residency, Zygote hosts an exhibition to showcase the work created by the visiting artists.

The Rasmuson Alaska Exchange Residency (2013 – 2017)

  • The Rasmuson Foundation sponsors this exchange, which lets a Cleveland artist attend Zygote’s sister host in Homer, Alaska — the Bunnell Art Street Studio.  This multidisciplinary arts center overlooks the Kenai Mountains and Kachemak Bay. In return, Zygote Press hosts an Alaskan artist for two months.

Creative Fusion Residencies (2012 – 2016)

  • Creative Fusion is an urban-based, community-engaged residency program for international artists. Created by the Cleveland Foundation, the program consists of two three-month residencies in Cleveland in the spring and fall each year. Local organizations host up to six artists from cultures that are underrepresented in Cleveland’s professional arts sector. The program consists of projects and events offered throughout the long-term residency.

    The program is primarily interested in artists from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, New Zealand, and Australia. Invited artists get the opportunity to develop new work and share a contemporary view of their culture with our community.
